Apologies for the poor quality of the header picture. It looks a bit bleached. Well it's nearly thirty years old. It's of Ugarit, a Bronze Age port on the Mediterranean in northern Syria. I went there by public bus one hot afternoon during our break from the dig at Tell Ahmar, Season 1994. The cold lemonade at a tiny cafe outside was very welcome.

I'm very fortunate to have done so much travel and in any country I visit, I try to get to archaeological sites, usually by public transport! It does take a little planning, but I've visited archaeological sites on my own in Israel, Syria, China and France.

I'm currently preparing a DIY itinerary of Roman sites in Provence, France. (Sign up to the newsletter if that's something that interests you and I'll keep you updated on progress and let you know when it's ready!
